Objective

Support and educate HBG staff in making best use of the Construction Information Service.

Solution

To provide HBG with a bespoke training programme initially for 200 HBG staff, supporting HBG in ensuring that their staff maximise the benefits of The Construction Information Service and reduce the requests to consultants to provide the information required for HBG projects.

Why IHS?

The Construction Information Service is an expert knowledge tool knowledge tool that delivers key technical information critical to all construction projects in one easy-to-use on-line package.
Developed by IHS and NBS, it provides instant full-text access to current regulations, standards, technical advice and a vast array of related news and briefings.
Fully searchable, intelligently classified and constantly updated, it’s an indispensable source of key information, tailored to meet your real needs.

The Construction Information Service Information includes all current key documents cited in the UK Building Regulations Approved Documents, Techncial Standards and Technical Booklets, providing documents critical to the design, detailing and construction of popular building types and civil engineering.

HBG is one of the major building companies in the UK. HBG UK operate in most private and public sectors offering five core business streams - design, construction property development, facilities management and PFI projects. For its project work, the company’s professional staff requires access to a broad range of information on standards and regulatory data within the construction sector.

HBG in theory, accessed this information from The Construction Information Service.
But the practice was very different. “People just weren’t using the system. They were relying on consultants to provide them with the relevant information,” explains Mark Ramessa, HBG’s Supply Chain Manager. “Quite often, the consultants were slow to respond because they were too busy. And in many cases, the consultants were actually using the same IHS dataset to source the information.”
Early in 2006, Mark Ramessa was organising supply chain training for staff from two regions, and he recognised that while these people were gathered together, a training course on The Construction Information Service could be tailored to their requirements.

He contacted IHS who provided two regional trainers. In a short period, 200 of HBG’s professional staff had personal tuition on how to use The Construction Information Service.

The results were extraordinary. “The best way to describe it is that we’d been walking past the biggest library in the world every day – but hardly ever going in. Those trainers opened the doors, showed us round, told us how to find books and gave us a library card,” says Ramessa. “Some people were amazed to find that we’d been overlooking such an enormous potential, right on our own doorstep.”
Altogether, 475 people have now been trained to use the service, and CIS usage has risen by over 100%.

HBG’s internal assessment of the course revealed that it was one of the most successful ever undertaken by the firm, rating 4.8 out of 6 on their scale. “The trainers were excellent,” says Ramessa. “They arranged a bespoke course. They were flexible with their dates. They adapted their approach to suit an audience of construction people – project managers, planners, quantity surveyors, estimators and so on – who are very resistant to anything that doesn’t directly improve their ability to do their work. And at the end, IHS came back to me to get my feedback on how the course had gone."
