Copyright and Document Usage Related FAQ's
- Q: Why can’t I select text to copy into another application from certain documents?
A: This is due to copyright restriction built into certain documents by the publisher, or documents that are scanned images as opposed to true pdf files.
- Q: I am intermittently having problems when trying to open up documents from the IHS website. The documents appear to halt during the download, or the document opens then crashes my entire Web Browser, what could be causing this?
A: This could be due to the size of the file you are trying to open, when you get the option to agree the copyright you can right click and choose “save target as” which will then allow you to save it direct to your pc to view it in full offline, therefore not crashing your pc/web browser.

- Q: How do I copy and paste from a PDF into my own reports etc?
A: To copy the text of the PDF, you highlight the chosen area and right click to choose copy and then open your report and right click in the area chosen to paste the text in. To copy a diagram/flow chart or table you need to select the tool on the top bar “snapshot tool (camera icon), then select the graphic which will automatically save it to your clipboard, then you open your report/specific document and right click in the chosen area to paste the graphic in.
- Q: Am I allowed to print/save/cut and paste from documents?
A: Each publisher will have varying copyright restrictions but the general terms are that you can print a copy of the document for your own use, if you are going to save a standard to your pc then it needs to be in a favourites file on IHS where we can email you when this standard changes, if this facility is not available with tracking then you need to destroy the standard from your pc after use and not make a library on your pc of all standards you may need in future. Cut and paste options are that you are only to copy up to 25% of the standard for referencing purposes and note on your document where the text has come from (ie BS 5588-1 2003).
