HSC Proposals to implement the second list of indicative occupational exposure limit values European Directive 2006/15/EC
This Consultative Document sets out the UK Health and Safety Commission’s (HSC’s) proposals for establishing Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) for the 33 substances listed in the Directive.

Ireland's Safe system of work
The Safe System of Work Plan aims to focus on those in the construction industry who are most at risk and empowering them to ensure that all necessary safety controls are in place prior to the commencement of planned work. There are five main publications that make up the series. Each form has a supplementary Pictogram Booklet, with detailed explanations of each safeguard mentioned on all forms, as well as a close look at various hazards.

New guidance on shiftwork
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has produced a new book that aims to improve the understanding of shift work and its impact on health and safety. More than 3.5 million people are employed as shift workers in the UK. They work in a wide variety of industries including the emergency services, healthcare, the utilities, transport, manufacturing, entertainment and retail. Poorly designed shift-working arrangements and/or long working hours may put them at risk of fatigue, accidents, injuries and ill health.

£160,000 settlement after rail worker's death
The family of a rail worker killed by a train near Purley Oaks station have received £160,000 compensation. All three companies denied liability, maintaining they were 'not responsible for the decision made by Mr Kassim to cross when he did.' Mr Justice Wilkie approved the £160,000 settlement, which was agreed without admission of liability.
